RSPCA Calendar is out again this year!

The 2011 RSPCA Calendars can be purchased for $20 each or 2 for $30 and can be purchased from the Cairns RSPCA Shelter, Corner Arnold & Greenbank Streets, Stratford, from Petstock in Mulgrave Road or The Feed Shop, 12-14 George Street, Gordonvale.

Last year's calendar raised $14,000 much needed funds which helped to buy dog kennels for weather protection and security for puppies, wall mounted fans to help keep the animals cool throughout the shelter during the hot summer months, two industrial washing machines, purchase of a rescue boat, trailor and equipment for the RSPCA inspector. All of these items would not have been possible without the generosity of everyone who supports the RSPCA.

Rescue boat and trailor purchased with funds raised from the RSPCA calendar.

Thank you to everyone who has helped the Cairns RSPCA shelter.

New Dog Chip Plan Revealed

A new dog breeder identification system is to be introduced next year which should help to stamp out dodgy puppy mills the RSPCA says. Desley Boyle the Queensland Local Government Minister announced that in 2011 dog breeders must be registered and their ID numbers displayed anywhere puppies are sold. Breeder's ID numbers must be included in the advertising of puppies for sale and breeding bitches will be micro chipped and their details included in the registration and micro chipping of every puppy sold.

RSPCA spokesperson, Michael Beattie said the new regulations would cut down on unscrupulous breeders and make internet dog sellers more accountable. "It's definitely a step in the right direction" Mr Beattie said.

RSPCA Causes - Justice for Animals

Legals cost but justice is priceless! Over $465,000 has been raised so far.

THE ISSUE
For years RSPCA Qld has been urging Queensland magistrates to treat cases of animal cruelty as the serious crimes that they are, not the misdemeanors that paltry fines and lenient sentences indicate. Current sentences and fines do not meet community expectationS of the intent of the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001, under which offenders can receive up to two years' imprisonment or a $100,000 fine for cruelty. Breaches of duty of care can earn a fine of up to $30,000 or one year imprisonment.

Unfortunately not all animals have loving homes

Over $465,000 has been raised in donations from kind and generous supporters - we're almost at our $500,000 target! Over 10,000 signatures or "Shows of Support" have been gathered for BLEATS. 15 Lawyers have joined BLEATS since the campaign began!

Since the launch of the Justice for Animals campaign outside the Brisbane Supreme Court on Wednesday May 27, state-wide support from proactive community members has greatly encouraged RSPCA Qld. Specially recruited and trained volunteers continue to spread the campaign message, "Legals Cost. Justice is Priceless."

Foster a Friend

Consider fostering a dog over the Christmas break so the Young Animal Protection Society (YAPS) can make room to save the pets abandoned over the Christmas holidays. You can choose the dog you would like to take home for Christmas once you are approved. Someone from YAPS will come out and do a property inspection as secure fencing is a must with a minimum height of 1.2m high and Council guidelines only allow two dogs at each property. If the kennels are not free of the pets already in their care, YAPS will not be able to rescue the animals left in pounds. Cats can also be fostered.

Pet Owners Warned - Watch out for Killer Snakes

Pet owners are warned to be on alert after a number of dogs were killed by venomous snakes across Cairns in recent weeks. The most recent being a Maltese Terrier killed by a Taipan at Palm Cove.

Taipans are one of the most venomous snakes in the world.

The increase in snake activity across the city is due to a wet Spring which has created a good breeding season for reptiles.

There are currently 40 amphibians in the hospital's care, including green tree frogs and white lipped tree frogs. The Hospital also carries out research to better understand the reasons behind the declining number of amphibians across the Far North.

Paronella Park Presents.......... The Impossible Dream by Philip Witts. An enchanting evening of romance, music, comedy and fine dining.

The story of Jose and Margarita Paronella is showcased in a theatre restaurant experience. Everyone has a dream. Jose's dream was to build a castle. He was a man on a mission. Paronella Park was intended as a monument of affection for his fiance back in Spain. However on his return to Spain his fiance had married someone else. He then married her younger sister, Margarita and returned to Australia in 1925. It wasn't until 1929 that Jose had saved enough to buy his piece of paradise beside Mena Creek Falls near Innisfail, south of Cairns. In 1935 Paronella Park opened to the public with its picnic area by the falls, dance hall and theatre, bridges, tennis courts and swimming pool.

Paronella Park, south of Cairns, is today a tourist attraction.

Tick Season in the Tropics

It's time to be extra vigilant with checking our pets for ticks. Until December, ticks will be spreading through bush, scrub and creeks. Vets are warning pet owners to be on the look out for the deadly paralysis tick. The neurotoxin affects the nervous and respiratory systems with pets losing feelings to their limbs and have trouble breathing if not treated quickly. 85% of ticks are found around the head and neck. Vets recommend fortnightly drip-on treatment, weekly tick baths and tick collars.

If we didn't have pets, how empty our lives would be!

Pet Food Recall - Natural Balance Pet Foods

June 18 - Natural Balance

Our 5 lb. and 28 lb. Sweet Potato & Chicken Dry Dog food, manufactured on December 17, 2009 with a “Best By” date of June 17, 2011 is being voluntarily recalled. A random sampling of this product tested positive for Salmonella by the FDA. In my mind, I asked, “How can this happen? I spent over $900,000 putting in our laboratory to test our products before we release them.” We tested samples from the production run when it was manufactured six months ago, and the results came back negative.

The following is a list of those states that are included in the voluntary recall: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

If you have this product, return for a refund.

Diets

Before starting any new eating plan you should consult your doctor to see if it is right for you, particularly if you are taking any medication.

Has anyone tried the Kick Start Soup Diet?

Stage 1 - Here are the details:

Enough for one person for 2 days.
Ingredients: 3 tomatoes, 2 large cans of crushed tomatoes, 2 cans of liquid stock (beef, chicken or vegetable), 2 cups of water, 1 packet of vegetable or French onion dry soup powder, 1 bunch spring onions, bunch of celery, including leaves, 2 cups of green beans, 3 green capsicums, 1kg carrots, 2 stock cubes (your choice, vegetable, chicken, beef).

Method
1. Chop all the vegies into small pieces and put them in a big pot with the remaining ingredients. Add salt & pepper to taste. Bring to boil and simmer until it is nice and tender.

Have as much of the soup as you want, whenever you want.

7 Day Plan
The quantities recommended are per day. Avoid toast and cereal for breakfast while on this plan. Stick with the recommended foods for each day.

You should only follow this seven-day eating plan for a maximum of three times in six months.

Day one -SOUP AND FRUIT: Eat any fruit except bananas because they are high in kilojoules. Eat as much as you want. If you do not want soup for breakfast, have a fruit salad instead.

Day two - SOUP AND VEGIES, NO FRUIT: Eat as much fresh, raw or lightly steamed vegies as you like. Leafy greens are great but avoid peas, corn and beans as they are high in sugar. Reward yourself at night with a jacket potato, a little butter or better still, some yoghurt.

Day three - Soup, Vegetables and Fruit.  Eat all you want but no potatoes.
Day four- Soup and Banana Smoothies.  Make a banana smoothie with milk because it is a great source of potassium. Have a maximum of three large bananas per day.

Day five - Soup, Beef and Tomotoes. Eat a piece of lean beef or a skinless breast of chicken no bigger than a deck of cards with six ripe tomatoes. These quantities are per day. You can go easy on the soup today.

Day six - Soup, Beef and Vegetables. Eat plenty of beef (skinless chicken or fish) and vegies today. You might not need soup as much but your body will tell you. No potatoes.

Day seven - Soup, Brown Rice, Vegetables & Fruit Juice. You might need more soup today.

Remember: do not eat any bread, fried foods or oil on the seven-day plan. While on the plan, do not have any soft drinks or alcohol.

You can drink unsweetened fruit juice or cranberry juice; black, green or herbal tea (you can have skim milk with black tea); coffee; skim milk and plenty of water.
If you have any side effects you can have one sandwich with cheese, ham, tomatoes per day. Otherwise discontinue.

By the end of the seven days you may have lost as much as 4-6kg, if you haven't put on those walking shoes and gone for a daily walk you won't have lost as much.

If you lose more than 6kg on Stage 1 do not attempt this stage again for a few months. Go on to stage two.

You should only follow this seven-day eating plan for a maximum of three times in 6 months. Once you've reached this maximum take 6 months off the plan and follow a low-GI program.

Once you've completed the seven-day eating plan it is time to move on to Stage 2 - a long-term, low-GI eating plan.

Stage 2 - Details here: http://au.todaytonight.yahoo.com/article/39710/diet/kick-start-stage
While stage one of the Kick-Start Diet brings rapid weight loss, Stage 2 begins where a lot of the carbohydrates you have been avoiding can slowly be returned to your diet.

RSPCA looking for owner

RSPCA Qld is looking for the owner of a 5 month old cattle dog cross that was found wandering the streets of Mt Morgan. The dog was in appalling condition with his face and limbs swollen by a severe flea infestation and demodex mange.

Inspector Laurie Stageman came across the dog, who has now been nicknamed Los, on Gordon Street where residents say he has been spotted regularly for two weeks.

“He was very timid and obviously suffering,” he said. “He’s receiving ongoing veterinary treatment and is currently with a foster carer.”

If anyone has any information they can contact RSPCA Cruelty Complaints hotline on 1300 852 188 or Inspector Stageman directly on 0404 097 521.
